Summertime brings plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, whether it’s relaxing at the beach or hiking on mountain trails. But while it is an exciting time to explore and travel, the hot weather does come with seasonal risks, from sunburn to dehydration. Here are four tips on how to travel safely in hot weather.

Hydrate

Dehydration can sneak up on you undetected. Even when you’re driving on the road and not exerting much physical effort, your body still uses up a lot of water to help regulate temperatures. Although the obvious downside of keeping yourself hydrated on the road is frequent pee breaks, it’s a small price to pay to be safe and comfortable while traveling in hot weather.

Apply Sunscreen

Close to 10,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer per day in the U.S. alone. And while sunscreen won’t be the holy grail that ends the condition, it is a useful product that minimizes the risk of skin cancer. Applying sunscreen while you’re outside, whether hiking or kayaking, can help protect your skin from the sun’s harsh UV rays.

Get Your Car Checked

If you plan to travel by road, make sure to have your car inspected and maintained prior. At the very least, get your car’s oil changed, have the tire’s pressure checked, and have the headlights and turn signals fixed or replaced. Oil and coolant levels should also be inspected before a long road trip. Lastly, stock some food, water, and first aid kit in your car in case of emergency.

Comfortable Apparel and Footwear

Breathable, lightweight fabrics are the preferred choice of garment when you are traveling in hot weather conditions. But in addition to comfort, make sure the fashion choices you make also bring sturdiness and protection against outside elements. Bring at least one pair of footwear that has treads to handle extensive walking tours or difficult hiking trails.

Following the tips aforementioned can help you enjoy the hot summer season in a safe and comfortable manner. While these tips do help avoid risk of injury in hot weather conditions, it’s best to just stay indoors when temperatures rise to extreme degrees.
